podium Importance of Social Networking
Everywhere you turn, there is most likely someone saying something about Twitter, Facebook, or Myspace. It seems as if everyone has a Twitter, or Myspace, or Facebook account these days. In fact, it seems odd if you don’t have one! Now, if you are new to the whole website thing (which I am assuming you are), you may be wondering why a social networking website could potentially help your website out so much. Well, the answer is pretty simple, so let’s hop into it!

Importance of Social Networking

Free Advertising

When most people hear “Free Advertising”, they usually jump all over it, because, well, it’s free. Think about it – by using a social networking website such as Twitter, you are free to post links back to anything on your website. As long as you don’t overdo it, people will most likely click on that link, giving you a possible loyal reader. Even if they then decide to never go to your site again, they still saw your website and content, and they will be able to refer you later on if necessary. And with the hundreds of thousand, maybe even millions of people who use social networks, the chances of this happening is giant.

Build relationships

When it comes to websites, building relationships with others is huge! If you can take the time to connect with others, you open yourself up to a whole new realm of possibilities. You can now get help from them, ask them to view any of your materials, or even go ahead and help them. In this world, there is no doubt that people are usually willing to help others out in exchange for something they want – knowledge or even your own personal views. Imagine yourself being represented with two people, one who has helped you majorly and one who’s never done a single thing for you. Who are you going to be more willing to help? Well, when you social network, you may pull out these friends and they could be the difference between you being on your own or you having ten people who “have your back”.

Share content with others

Everyone has probably heard people saying to focus on one certain age group, but with Social Networking, is that really possible? No. Ages 13 and higher flood Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace, making it almost impossible to avoid other age groups from seeing what you’ve posted. But isn’t that a good thing? Let’s say you’re target audience’s age is 15-18 year olds. By using social networking sites, however, you can increase your range of audience by double, maybe triple. Maybe you’ll end up finding that you work better with a different age group, but who knows. It’s all up to you.

What do you think?

What are your views on Social Networking? What social networks do you find to be better than others? Many use Twitter, but they all have to start somewhere, so maybe the newer site you use today could become the “next big thing” tomorrow.
